Dr. Samuel Hahnemann (Founder of Homeopathy)
Dr. Samuel Hahnemann was a German physician but became more popular as a founder of a system of alternative medicine called homeopathy.
Hahnemann was born in Meissen, a town northwest of Dresden on both banks of the river in the Free State of Saxony in eastern Germany, on 10th of April 1755.
As a young man, Hahnemann became proficient in a number of languages, including English, French, Italian, Greek and Latin.
Hahnemann studied medicine for two years at Leipzig and then for ten months in Vienna. After one term of further study, he graduated MD at the university of Erlangen on 10th of August 1779, qualifying with honors. His poverty may have forced him to choose Erlangen, as the school's fees were lower.
Hahnemann's thesis was titled "Conspectus adfectuum spasmodicorum aetiologicus et therapeuticus" (A Dissertation on the Causes and Treatment of Cramps).
In 1781 Hahnemann took a doctor's position in the upper-mining area of Mansfield, Saxony, but soon he abandoned his medical practice as he was extremely dissatisfied with the state of medicines. He particularly objected practices such as bloodletting. He claimed that the medicine he had been taught to practice was doing harm to patient instead of good.
After giving up his practice around 1784, Hahnemann made his living chiefly as a writer and translator of scientific and medical textbooks, while resolving also to investigate the causes of medicine's alleged errors.
It was in 1790, while translating William Cullen's "A Treatise on the Materia Medica", Hahnemann encountered the claim that 'cinchona', the bark of a Peruvian tree, was effective in treating malaria because of its astringency. Hahnemann believed that other stringent substances are not effective against malaria and began to research cinchona's effect on the human body through self-testing experiments.
He noted that the drug had produced symptoms similar to those of malaria in himself, so he concluded that it would do so in any healthy person also. healthy individual. He announced the existence of homeopathy's principle of healing: "that which can produce a set of symptoms in a healthy individual, can treat a sick individual who is manifesting a similar set of symptoms".
This principle, "like cures like", became the basis for an approach to medicine which he gave the name homeopathy.
In his further researches, Hahnemann, initially, concluded that ingesting substances to produce noticeable changes in the body resulted in toxic effects. He then attempted to mitigate this problem through exploring dilutions of the compounds he was testing. He claimed that these dilutions, when prepared according to his technique of succussion (systematic mixing through vigorous shaking) and potentization, were still effective in alleviating the same symptoms in the sick, without producing toxic effects.
Hahnemann began practicing this new technique, which attracted other doctors. In 1796, he first published an article in German-language medical journal about the homeopathic approach. In 1810, following series of further essays, Hahnemann published "Organon of the Rational Art of Healing", the first systematic treatise and containing all his detailed instructions on the subject. The 6th Organon Edition was published after his death on 2nd of July 1843 in Paris.
Hahnemann faced very strong orthodox attacks upon him and upon homeopathy during later years of his life, amounting to a vicious campaign of persecution. He was neglected and avoided by the students because of his continuous antagonism of the main stream medical profession.
Partly through attracting great controversy, and partly through impressive clinical results, homeopathy rapidly became popular throughout the world, including America, the place where it always found the sympathy of the rich and titled, as a safe alternative to bleeding and purging.
